Si dice che il brano intitolato «Desiderata» sia stato trovato nella vecchia chiesa di San Paolo a Baltimora e che sia datato 1692. In realtà questa prosa lirica fu scritta da un poeta dell’Indiana di nome Max Ehrmann e venne registrata per i diritti d’autore alla Libreria del Congresso nel 1927. I diritti furono rinnovati dalla vedova, perciò lo scritto è ancora protetto dalla legge statunitense sul copyright. Quindi, questo popolare scritto filosofico ha un autore e una data piuttosto recenti. Tuttavia ciò che dice resta senza tempo e conferisce al suo autore il diritto a una nicchia in quel pantheon poetico cui appartengono coloro che hanno, almeno una volta, percepito chiaramente la verità eterna.
Procedi con calma in mezzo al rumore e alla fretta e ricorda quanta pace può esserci nel silenzio. Per quanto ti è possibile, senza sottometterti, sii sempre in buoni rapporti col prossimo. Esprimi la tua verità con tranquillità e chiarezza e ascolta gli altri, anche gli ottusi e gli ignoranti: anch’essi hanno la loro storia. Evita le persone rumorose ed aggressive: opprimono lo spirito. Se ti paragoni agli altri potresti diventare vanesio e amaro; perché ci saranno sempre persone superiori o inferiori a te. Goditi i tuoi risultati così come i tuoi progetti. Conserva l’interesse per il tuo lavoro: per quanto umile sia; è ciò che realmente possiedi nella mutevole sorte del tempo. Sii prudente nei tuoi affari, perché il mondo è pieno di tranelli. Ma ciò non accechi la tua capacità di distinguere la virtù; molte persone lottano per grandi ideali e dovunque la vita è piena di eroismo. Sii te stesso. Soprattutto non fingere negli affetti e non essere memmeno cinico sull’amore; perché, nonostante tutte le aridità e le disillusioni esso è perenne come l’erba. Accetta benevolmente gli ammaestramenti che derivano dall’età e molla con un sorriso sereno le cose della giovinezza. Coltiva la forza di spirito per fartene scudo contro l’improvvisa sfortuna. Ma non tormentarti con l’immaginazione. Molte paure nascono dalla stanchezza e dalla solitudine. Al di là di una salutare disciplina, sii gentile con te stesso. Tu sei figlio dell’universo, non meno degli alberi e delle stelle; tu hai il diritto di essere qui. E che ti sia chiaro o no, non c’è dubbio che l’universo ti si sta schiudendo come deve. Perciò sii in pace con Dio comunque tu lo concepisca e quali che siano le tue lotte e le tue aspirazioni; conserva la pace dello spirito pur nella rumorosa confusione della vita. Con tutti i suoi inganni, le ingratitudini e i sogni infranti, questo è pur sempre un mondo stupendo. Stai attento e fa’ di tutto per essere felice.

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly: and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, because the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many people strive for high ideals and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than a tree and the stars; you’ve a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its shams, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.
